Ordering principles allow us to create a design that is spontaneous and free but also cohesive and controlled. In our second year, first semester, we were challenged with designing a performing arts center. I chose to organize the building along a grid that defined the rooms, the windows, and the exterior mask of the building. This ordering system allowed me to create an axis through every entrance to the building to make both internal and external gathering spaces. This specific design challenged me greatly in the sense that everything was calculated and had to be perfect. The grid's function was to guide the interior but also the unique structure outside that also had a large impact on the exterior circulation. Each and every change I make had a cascading effect that constantly pushed my design further and further and fully developed the project.
